This video demonstrates 5 great catching drills you can use with your catchers:
- Straight Ahead Drill: This drill is performed by standing/kneeling about 15-20' away from the catcher, throwing balls on a one-hop, directly down the middle of the plate. The catcher should focus on dropping down on both knees and blocking the ball.
- Glove Side Drill: Coach should position himself at a 45 degree angle, opposite of the catcher's glove side. Like the Straight Ahead Drill, throw the ball on a one-hop to the catcher, but off to his/her glove side. Catcher should slide over and in front of the ball, knocking it down.
- Arm Side Drill: This is the same as the Glove Side Drill, except the drill should be performed to the opposite side of the plate, away from the catcher's glove hand.
- Half and Half Drill: Coach should pitch to the catcher, throwing half of the balls in the air/to the glove, and half of the balls in the dirt, in no particular order. This forces the catcher to practice working on his/her reaction.
- Hockey Goalie Drill: Set up a goal using 2 fence posts. Position the catcher in between the posts, in a catcher's position. Rapid fire balls at the catcher, forcing him/her to block the balls and prevent them from going into the goal.
