Equipment Needed

  • Football

  • A quarterback or coach with a ball stands behind the defender to throw once the receiver creates separation.

Instructions

  1. The defender plays real man coverage technique — press jam or off-man backpedal — based on the called alignment.
  2. The receiver uses a release move (swim, rip, or stutter) to beat the jam, then runs the called route with a hard, sudden break.
  3. The quarterback throws once separation is created, putting the ball where only the receiver can make the play.
  4. Rotate receivers and defensive backs after every 4–6 reps so both sides get offense and defense repetitions.
Coaching Points
  • The release move needs to be violent and decisive — a half-hearted release lets a good press corner reset the jam.
  • Sell the route stem in one direction before breaking hard to the called route; a rounded break gives coverage time to recover.
  • Defensive backs should be coached just as hard here — correct backpedal and hip turn technique makes the receiver's job harder, which is the point.
  • Track win rate for both sides over the rep count to keep the competitive element honest.

Variation

Add a second defender playing a shallow zone behind the man coverage to simulate a combo coverage look, or limit the QB's throw window to 2.5 seconds to force decisive, fast routes.
