Equipment Needed
- Cones or tape to mark approach spots
- Balls (for the finishing stage)
Setup
- Mark a starting spot roughly 8 to 10 feet off the net with a cone or tape line.
- No ball is needed for the first stage — this is a pure footwork and arm-swing rehearsal.
Instructions
- Stage 1 (dry approach): from the starting cone, take the three- or four-step approach (small-big-big for right-handed hitters), finishing with a two-foot jump and full arm swing — no ball.
- Stage 2 (with a tossed ball): a coach or partner tosses the ball to the net; the player times the same approach to attack the toss.
- Stage 3 (off a set): add a setter delivering a live set for the player to attack with the same approach rhythm.
- Rotate through the line quickly, focusing on timing consistency over power at first.
Coaching Points
- The last two steps should be quick and explosive, converting horizontal speed into vertical lift.
- Arms swing back during the approach and drive forward and up on the jump — don't let them lag behind the legs.
- Land balanced on two feet, inside the court, absorbing the landing with bent knees.
- Timing the jump to the set is the priority over swing power at this stage — a well-timed approach makes the swing easier.
Variation
Add a blocker on the other side of the net once approach timing is consistent, or vary the set location (outside, middle, back row) to build a wider attacking skill set.
