Shell Defense Drill

Shell drill teaches the core principles of team defense: on-ball pressure, help-side positioning, closing out under control, and talking on every rotation. It's the foundation most team defenses are built on.

Equipment Needed

  • One basketball
  • Half court

Setup

  • Four offensive players stand at the top of the key and both wings, four defenders match up one-on-one.
  • No dribbling or scoring — this is a positioning and communication drill, not a live scrimmage.
Shell Defense Drill1X2X3XPass around perimeter; on-ball closes out, help-side adjusts

Instructions

  1. The offense passes the ball around the perimeter (top to wing to top to opposite wing).
  2. On every pass, the on-ball defender closes out under control with hands active; off-ball defenders adjust their help position relative to the ball.
  3. Freeze the drill periodically to check help-side spacing — off-ball defenders should be able to see both their player and the ball at all times.
  4. Rotate in a live 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 element from the shell once positioning becomes second nature.
Coaching Points
  • Closeouts should be quick feet, not a big final jump — players should be able to stop and stay in front.
  • Off-ball defenders talk through every pass: 'ball,' 'help,' 'deny.'
  • Keep a hand up to contest without fouling on the closeout.
  • Reset defenders to proper shell position after every rotation before continuing.

Variation

Allow one live dribble drive from each offensive catch to test help rotations, or add a skip pass across the court to teach longer closeout distances.
