PassingTransition

3-Man Weave

The 3-Man Weave develops passing accuracy on the move, court spacing in transition, and conditioning — all while reinforcing the habit of passing to a teammate ahead rather than dribbling the length of the floor.

Equipment Needed

  • One basketball per group of three
  • Full court

Setup

  • Three players line up across the baseline: one in the middle with the ball, one on each wing.
  • Additional groups of three can start at staggered intervals down the sideline to keep the drill continuous.
3-Man Weave1Starts w/ ball23cutcutlayupPass → cut behind → repeat down the floor;finish with a layup

Instructions

  1. The middle player passes to a wing player, then sprints behind them and cuts toward the opposite sideline.
  2. The receiving wing player passes to the new middle player (the one who just cut) and follows the same behind-the-pass, cut-through pattern.
  3. Repeat the weave pattern down the full length of the floor, finishing with a layup once the group crosses half court.
  4. The player who did not touch the ball on the finishing sequence should be trailing for the offensive rebound.
Coaching Points
  • Passes should lead the receiver — never make a teammate slow down or reach back for the ball.
  • Cutters must sprint, not jog, behind the passer to keep proper spacing.
  • Call out 'ball' before every pass so it becomes an automatic communication habit.
  • No dribbling during the weave — this forces the passing-and-cutting rhythm the drill is designed to build.

Variation

Add a defender trailing the play for a 3-on-1 finish to raise the difficulty, or require two full weave patterns before the finish for a longer conditioning emphasis.
